The series Theresienstadt is a pictorial investigation into the map of Terezin, an 18th century military citadel located 60 km north of Prague. After invading the Czech Republic, the Nazis turned Terezin into a Jewish ghetto and made a propaganda film there to show a “model ghetto” to the outside world. The reality for the prisoners was very different: hunger, cold, overcrowding, dirt, epidemics and constant deportations to Auschwitz. Nevertheless, it was a ghetto with a highly active cultural resistance, and numerous musical, theatrical, literary and art works were produced there.
